The Plan

The half mile professional karting facility of Pat's Acres in Canby, Oregon, along with their 45mph karts, was chosen as the pilot site for the ARK Kart Camp. Daniel lived only a few miles away and could oversee the details from his office. Canby Conference Center, only two miles from Pat's Acres, became the home base for housing, food and recreation.

One can not have an ARK Kart Camp without kids. We knew the inner-city was the spot to look for ARKs but had no idea how to procure them. We went to churches, foster home organizations and alternative schools. In the end, most of the ARK's came from an inner-city ministry and Young Life in Portland, Oregon and an alternative school in Salem, Oregon. Twenty kids, and seven counselors from these organizations, participated in the first ARK Kart Camp.

An engine education program was put in place with the help of a professional service technician. Engines were acquired and tools were donated by a major tool distributor. This instructional time took place in the afternoon following the karting.

Finally, basketball, swimming and movies filled the spare time while the ARKs were at the camp ground.
